Privacy Policy
Information Collected
Kanji A Day does not include advertising, cross-app tracking, or an account system operated by the developer. The app does not sell personal information. All study content is included with the app and can be used offline.
The Product Analytics section below applies to versions that include Allow analytics in Settings. Earlier versions without this feature do not send these analytics events.
The app stores the study information needed to provide its flashcard and scheduling features:
- Review history and scheduling information for studied characters, including attempt counts, correct-answer counts, review dates, next-review dates, and remembered streaks.
- Study preferences, including whether obsolete kana are included, whether Kana or Kanji appears first, the selected estimated JLPT levels, whether the getting-started guide appears prominently or at the bottom of the study screen, and whether the Daily Kanji card appears on the Home screen.
- Favorite Kanji selections, including whether a character is currently marked as a favorite.
This study information is stored locally on the device. When the user is signed into iCloud and iCloud is available for the app, Apple CloudKit also stores it in the user’s private iCloud database so progress, preferences, and favorites can be restored and synchronized across the user’s devices. CloudKit synchronization is provided by Apple and is subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Daily Kanji history is calculated on the device from its daily schedule, including dates when the app was not opened. It is not a log of app visits or previously viewed cards and is not independently synchronized through iCloud. The schedule’s first-open date and ordering seed are stored locally in storage shared by the app and its widget. Reminder settings, including enabled state, time, and selected weekdays, are stored on the device. Reminders are scheduled locally through Apple’s notification system; they do not require a developer-operated push-notification service.
Kanji A Day uses Apple’s StoreKit for its optional in-app purchases. Purchase processing and entitlement history are managed by Apple. Purchase entitlements are not stored in the study database or included in study-data exports.
Product Analytics
When enabled, Kanji A Day sends limited product analytics to the developer’s Veda service using the Rasiel library. Veda is hosted on Railway. These event counts help the developer understand which study and discovery features are useful and decide what to improve.
The events describe:
- Starting and completing practice, the practice mode, whether it is initial or repeat practice, and a broad deck-size range when practice is completed. Favorite Kanji openings count as collection browsing, not graded reviews.
- The first use of answer reveal, grading, or Romaji reveal during a practice run. Individual grade results and study content are not sent.
- Opening Daily Kanji from Home, a widget, a reminder, or a link. These events include a broad notification-permission state and whether the app’s reminders preference is enabled; they do not establish that a notification was delivered.
- Opening widget instructions, the Study Guide, or the optional Other Apps screen. An Other Apps opening does not report which apps were selected or downloaded.
- The broad result of an explicit reminder on/off attempt. Reminder times, weekdays, time zones, and automatic scheduling activity are not sent.
Each event includes its name, an event timestamp, the app’s source name, environment, app version/build, platform, and analytics-library version. The service also records when an event is received. A random identifier for each event supports delivery acknowledgements and duplicate prevention; it is not a person, device, installation, or session identifier.
Analytics does not include characters being studied, glyphs, meanings or readings, card identifiers, favorite selections, Daily Kanji history dates, individual grades, study history, due counts, exact deck sizes, reminder schedules, purchase records, payment information, location, names, email addresses, account identifiers, advertising identifiers, raw URLs, or free-form error messages. The library does not generate user, device, installation, or session identifiers. The developer does not combine events into individual user profiles, match people across apps or devices, sell analytics data, or share it for advertising.
Allow analytics is enabled by default when analytics is configured, unless you have already saved a choice. You can turn it off in Settings. Your choice is stored on that device and preserved across app updates; it is not synchronized through iCloud. Turning it off stops collection and deletes unsent queued events. Activity while it is off is not replayed if you enable it later. Already-received events are not deleted by turning it off. Study-data export, reset, and deletion controls do not change this separate analytics preference.
Sending events requires an internet connection. Unsent events are stored locally for up to seven days and may be discarded sooner when the queue reaches its size limit. The analytics queue is excluded from device backups. Study features remain available without an internet connection or when analytics is disabled. The widget itself does not send analytics; accepted widget links are recorded by the main app when opened.
Received production events are retained without a fixed expiration so the developer can compare activity over time. Encrypted database backups are retained for 30 days; copies downloaded by the developer require separate deletion. Turning analytics off or deleting the app does not remove events already received. Because the events have no person or installation identifier, the developer cannot reliably locate one person’s events for an individual deletion request. You may email questions about analytics or retention; please do not send study data or personal identifiers to try to identify analytics events.
Network Processing and Other Apps
Railway and other network providers may process ordinary network information, including IP addresses, request times, and request information, to deliver, operate, and protect their services. IP addresses are not included in the app’s analytics payload or Veda’s event database. The developer does not use infrastructure logs to identify people or link their app activity. This network processing is separate from the nonidentifying product events described above.
When the user opens the optional Other Apps screen, Kanji A Day first downloads a developer-authored app catalog from https://rlziii.com/projects/other-apps.json. The request does not include study progress, preferences, purchase state, contact information, or an app-generated user identifier. As with an ordinary website request, the hosting provider may process standard network information such as the device’s IP address, request date and time, and user-agent information to deliver and protect the service. The developer does not use this catalog request for advertising, analytics, or tracking and does not associate it with study information. Separately, when analytics is enabled, opening the screen records the limited event described above.
Kanji A Day then sends the catalog’s App Store identifiers to Apple’s iTunes Lookup service and downloads the corresponding promotional app-icon artwork from Apple’s content-delivery network. These Apple services are subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. If the catalog or metadata lookup is unavailable, the Other Apps screen presents a retry option; individual artwork failures use a generic placeholder. The app’s study features remain available.
Data Retention and Control
Local and synchronized study information is retained so the app can preserve progress and preferences between launches and across the user’s devices. Removing the app from one device removes that installation’s local copy, but does not by itself delete study information already synchronized to the user’s private iCloud database.
The Settings screen provides the following controls:
- Export Study Data creates a portable JSON copy of the current review history, scheduling information, study preferences, and active favorite Kanji selections, then presents Apple’s Share Sheet. The user chooses whether and where to save or share that exported file. Files saved outside Kanji A Day are controlled by the selected destination and are not deleted by the app.
- Reset Progress deletes review history and scheduling information while keeping study preferences, favorites, and purchases. The deletion synchronizes through iCloud to the user’s other devices.
- Reset All Preferences returns the synchronized study preferences to their defaults while keeping progress, favorites, and purchases.
- Delete Synced Study Data deletes review history, study preferences, and favorite selections from the device and the user’s private iCloud database. When initiated offline, the local deletion is synchronized after CloudKit becomes available. The deletion propagates to the user’s other devices. In-app purchases remain associated with the user’s App Store account and are not affected.
Users can also remove individual favorites by tapping the heart on a Kanji card. Removing a favorite preserves that character’s review history; its saved selection changes to not favorited and synchronizes through iCloud.
Users may also manage app access to iCloud through Apple’s system settings. Changes made through Apple account or iCloud data-management tools are governed by Apple and may affect whether data remains available to the app.
Deleting the app removes its local settings and unsent analytics queue, subject to any device backups managed by Apple. It does not delete study information already synchronized through iCloud, analytics already received by Veda, or App Store purchase entitlements.
Support Messages
If you email the developer, the developer receives your email address and whatever information you choose to include, and uses it to respond to your request. Support messages are not combined with product analytics. Do not include sensitive information that is unnecessary for support.
